After scolding Common Law Lawyers for protesting on the streets of Bamenda, Buea, Limbe and Muyuka, and telling them how they will face the law, Justice Minister, Laurent Esso suddenly made a u-turn, disclosing yesterday that Head of State Paul Biya, has ordered that a forum be convened to properly discuss the problem of the protesting lawyers.
After a meeting that lasted for hours in Yaoundé, Esso came out and disclosed that the Head of State has ordered his close collaborators to prepare for an eminent meeting of Stake holders in the Justice sector which among others will scrutinize the worries and Common Law Lawyers and seek for lasting Solutions. His own words;
“Mr. President of the Cameroon Bar Council, Mr. President of the General Assembly, I want to add that after the strike actions taken in some major towns in North West and South West regions, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Paul Biya has asked for preparation of a meeting grouping all actors in the Justice sector which will look into these problems and seek for lasting solutions. The first phase which consists of collecting preliminary information on the problem has just ended and things are being assembled. There was equally the problem of the incapability of French Speaking magistrates sent to North West and South West regions to practice in English. It was noticed that the lawyers had a reason on that, not on the technical aspect but on the knowledge of working language of Common law which is English. The head of state has decided that those Magistrates will be redeployed.”
