Singer-songwriter Bryson Tiller surprised several shoppers by footing the bill for senior citizens’ groceries in his hometown. The “Exchange” performer got into the holiday spirit last week when he visited two supermarkets in Louisville, Kentucky.
Shocked Kroger and Pic Pac customers shared their stories with WDRB Tuesday, Dec. 21, and many were delighted not only because the received their goods for free but because they met a Grammy-nominated R&B star.
“He said, ‘Why don’t you fill up that whole basket?’” Kroger shopper Joann Samuels said. “I said, ‘What do you mean, fill up the whole basket?’ He said, ‘Fill it up and I’ll pay for it.’”
Samuels was admittedly skeptical at first but after sharing her disbelief, she recalled Tiller saying it was “my way of giving back at Christmas time.”
He ultimately paid for her $59.81 bill as well as the customer ahead of her, whose goods totaled close to $100.
“This must be really true,” Samuels said after she saw Tiller waiting for her at the checkout line. “He must really be paying for my groceries!”
Tiller’s goodwill didn’t end there. When he visited Pic Pac, he explained paying for senior citizens’ food was his chance to provide for the community.
“He was like, ‘I’m home for the holidays and I just came to give back to my city,” cashier Jaron Alexander shared. “[He said,] ‘I grew up in the South end and I shop in here a lot, and I want to give back.’”
Younger shoppers were overjoyed when they discovered it was Tiller who was the good Samaritan.
“I just looked over and I just saw his face, and then I was like telling my mom and sister, ‘I think that’s Bryson Tiller,’” Kendrick James said. “And my mom was like, ‘Ain’t no way that’s Bryson Tiller. I don’t think he’d be in Louisville right now.’”
But James’ sister, LaShora Davis, eagerly asked the singer who he was. Once she confirmed Tiller’s identity, she let her excitement be known.
“I was screaming so loud the whole store heard me!” Davis said. “He started laughing and smiling and everything. He was so nice and humble.”
