Cameroon:Bakary defends Derby’s early departure from CEMAC summit in Yaounde

Chadian president Idriss Deby Itno .

President Paul Biya of Cameroon who is not current president of CEMAC,invited the leaders of the six member countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) in Yaoundé from Thursday 22 to Friday 23 December 2016 for an extraordinary summit.

The resolutions adopted at the summit clearly indicate that the Central African sub-region will not have a better tomorrow. Due to a severe economic crisis, CEMAC countries pledged to tighten their belts, rationalize public spending, as they continue to live in the ‘French cage’ of the  franc zone.

At the time of the reading of the Communiqué of the summit to the press, Chadian president Idriss Derby Itno was no where to be found .As reported by yesterday, The Chadian president left his peers before the closing ceremony of the summit.

Public opinion holds that the  attitude of the Chadian leader who had declared last August during the Independence Day of his country that the CFA franc prevents West Africa and Africa Is a way of disagreeing with certain resolutions adopted in Yaoundé.

Asked about the hasty departure of the Head of State of Chad, Issa Tchiroma, the Cameroonian Minister of Communication, said that Idriss Deby had left because of his busy schedule. However, the spokesman for the Cameroonian government initially insisted on the rumor circulating that Derby had boycotted the final session of the of the work of the summit.

Issa Tchiroma

“That’s completely wrong. I would like to categorically denial. A formal denial of these allegations, which are nothing more than a grotesque transvestite of reality. A denial of truth. I speak of this  with all the solemnity and the necessary authority because I had the privilege of having been nominated by the President of the Republic of Cameroon, His Excellency Paul Biya, to be the accompanying minister of the President of the Republic of Cameroon.

I therefore speak with full knowledge of the facts. The President of the Republic of Chad took part in all the work at every stage during the Yaounde summit. And his signature appears on all the documents that required him signing. It is simply that when the CEMAC experts and technicians came together to work, the IMF experts found themselves working with those of the CEMAC, the experts from the French treasury met with the Experts of the IMF and the CEMAC, after their job and all the Heads of State were convinced that around noon that they would come to a conclusion. Since all Heads of State had agreed on the results achieved by the experts.

Unfortunately, instead of the work ending at noon, they went until 2 pm and President Derby had scheduled the return to Chad around noon because he had other activities planed.Nothing more. So of course he did not wait to till the final communiqué was read, but he signed all the documents, “Issa Tchiroma told a press briefing he gave in Yaounde on Saturday, December 24, 2016.
