JOEL MATIP has agreed to join Liverpool from Schalke 04 after signing a pre-contract to move in the summer.
Joel Matip is set to become Jurgen Klopp’s second signing as Liverpool boss.The Centre-back Matip, 24, will arrive on a free transfer.Manager Jurgen Klopp has been linked with the Cameroon international since arriving at Anfield and will make him his second signing after Marko Grujic of Red Star Belgrade.
Matip, who can also play in midfield, has a burgeoning reputation. He has been an ever-present in the Schalke side this term in the Bundesliga, netting three goals.The 6ft 4in defender also has plenty of Champions League experience to add to the team.
Reports in Germany suggested Schalke were lining up a new contract for Matip in a bid to keep hold of him, but Liverpool have now secured their target.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are likely to allow Kolo Toure to leave when his contract expires in the summer.
The 34-year-old netted his first Premier League goal of the season yesterday at Aston Villa in Liverpool’s 6-0 thrashing.
However, Toure’s time at Anfield, having joined in 2013 from Manchester City, appears to be up.
